St. Margaret’s Episcopal School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head Cross Country Coach to lead the school’s cross country program. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of cross country running, strong leadership and organizational skills, and a commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive team culture. As the Head Coach, you will be responsible for guiding student-athletes to success both on and off the course, while also managing and enhancing the program’s overall development.

Responsibilities

Leadership Develop and communicate a clear vision for the cross country program, inspiring student-athletes, coaches, and parents to actively support and contribute to that vision. Set clear expectations for student-athletes and create a roadmap to help them achieve their personal and athletic goals. Assemble, lead, and mentor a dedicated coaching staff who share the program’s vision and values, ensuring effective collaboration at all levels. Provide stability and guidance in times of adversity, offering timely direction to students, coaches, and parents during challenges. Set realistic yet ambitious program goals and create actionable plans to achieve them. Foster an environment that values hard work, sportsmanship, and a love for the sport of cross country. Knowledge of Sport Stay informed of current trends and developments in cross country running, integrating best practices into training, competition strategies, and team culture. Develop strategic and effective training programs that help students improve their athletic abilities and performance. Cultivate relationships with local, state, and national cross country communities to attract talented athletes and assistant coaches. Stay current in the field through professional development, including attending conferences or clinics to continue learning and growing as a coach. Implement age-appropriate training techniques and best teaching methods for middle school and high school athletes. Offer support and guidance to students interested in pursuing cross country beyond high school.

Administrative Skills

Oversee the vertical integration of the program, managing cross country from middle school through high school, ensuring smooth alignment of skills and philosophies across levels. Coordinate with Sports Performance, our athletic trainer, and other school staff to ensure all aspects of the program are well-supported and administered. Organize and manage practices, meets, and competitions for all levels of the cross country program, ensuring a balanced and effective schedule. Ensure proper equipment and facilities are available, working with the maintenance staff to maintain an optimal training and competition environment. Complete necessary paperwork and meet all requirements set by the school, league, and CIF. Attend mandatory meetings and communicate regularly with school administration and athletic department staff.

Cultural Aptitude

Understand the balance students must maintain between athletics and academics, supporting them in their efforts to succeed in both areas. Foster a culture of belief in individual and team success, ensuring students remain motivated and confident in their ability to achieve their goals. Communicate the purpose and value of cross country to students, helping them understand the benefits and importance of the program. Respect the diverse backgrounds and values of the St. Margaret’s community, ensuring the program promotes inclusivity and understanding. Maintain a supportive and respectful relationship with the broader school community, including faculty, staff, and parents. Character

Serve as a role model for students, demonstrating strong moral character and integrity both on and off the course. Represent St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in a positive manner at all times, adhering to the school’s expectations for behavior and conduct. Make choices that uphold the reputation of the school and maintain a professional, respectful presence within the community. Follow all school policies and adhere to local, state, and federal laws.
