Sequoyah School seeks a dynamic and innovative Experimental/Performing Arts Teacher to lead our program. The ideal candidate will guide students in exploring unconventional approaches to performance, fostering creativity and pushing the boundaries of traditional theater. The Experimental/Performing Arts Teacher plays a vital role in fostering creativity, collaboration, and self-expression across all grade levels. This dynamic position requires enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for engaging students in the performing arts through a variety of projects and productions.

The Experimental/Performing Arts Teacher collaborates with faculty to incorporate theater into various subject areas and tailors teaching methods to suit the developmental stages of different grade levels. A key highlight of the program is the culminating 8th-grade production at the end of the school year. Additionally, the Experimental/Performing Arts Teacher is responsible for fostering an appreciation for performance arts, encouraging student voice, and supporting school-wide arts initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Teach engaging and developmentally appropriate Experimental/Performing Arts classes for students in grades K-8.
  • Develop and implement a curriculum that is responsive to student interests and aligned with the school’s mission and Habits of Mind.
  • Direct and produce smaller performances or projects for various classes, with the possibility of a major production for the 8th grade.
  • Design lessons that incorporate acting techniques, improvisation, stagecraft, and storytelling.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to integrate Performing arts into interdisciplinary projects.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom culture that encourages creativity, risk-taking, and teamwork.
  • Facilitate student-led productions, providing guidance while allowing for creative autonomy.
  • Communicate regularly with parents through curriculum updates and student progress reports.
  • Supervise students and model positive behavior, citizenship, and respect for others.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development, and school community events.
  • Manage props, costumes, and stage materials in coordination with school resources.
  • Work in collaboration with the music teacher and support extracurricular and after-school performing arts activities as needed.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Have experience teaching experimental and/or performing arts, preferably in a progressive, student-centered environment.
  • Are passionate about fostering creativity, collaboration, and confidence in students.
  • Are skilled in project-based learning and interdisciplinary curriculum integration.
  • Can adapt instructional methods to meet the diverse needs and interests of students across grade levels.
  • Balance artistic exploration with academic rigor.
  • Works well in a collaborative faculty environment and is open to feedback and new ideas.
  • Have experience directing student productions and managing all aspects of school performances.
  • Are knowledgeable about various theatrical disciplines, including stage direction, playwriting, and technical work.
  • Is committed to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and social change through performance.
  • This is a full-time position that requires energy, adaptability, and a commitment to inspiring students through the performing arts.
