The Waverly School

Reporting to the Head of School, and working closely with the Director of Development, Director of Enrollment Management and other administrators on campus, the Director of Communications and Marketing serves as the school’s communications and marketing strategist, leading the design and implementation of a multi-year strategy focused on producing clear and effective communications while ensuring brand identity, messaging coherence, and consistency across all channels.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to the design and implementation of the school’s short- and long-term communications and marketing strategies, working collaboratively with the Head of School, Director of Enrollment Management, Director of Development, and other senior administrators across campus.
  • Maintains the school’s style guide, supervising, editing, and often writing all public-facing written communications to ensure consistency, clarity, and a tone in line with the character of the school and its community.
  • Develops and maintains a communications calendar to ensure timely, coordinated, and consistent publication of news and announcements
  • Oversees the school’s public relations strategy, writing press releases and maintaining relationships with important local and regional news organizations
  • Generates and edits written content and coordinates supporting visuals to be used in publications, social media, online newsletters, and on the website.
  • Develops and edits school periodicals, leading creative direction and design, contracting writers, designers, and printers as needed for production
  • Manages online communications, website design and content, social media strategy and use, and generation of photo and video content for web, social media, and print publications.
  • Take photographs of relevant school events and maintain digital archives of important school events.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Required Experience:

  • At least 5 years of independent school or university level marketing and/or communications experience
  • Effective use and direction of social media tools and applications: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Microsoft Office suite, Mailchimp, Adobe suite, Google suite

Desired Skills:

  • Exceptional writing and editing capabilities
  • Fundamentals of photography
  • Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin

Physical Demands and Abilities:

  • Work with frequent interruptions
  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Regularly spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers.
  • Must be able to stand, lift, push, pull, stoop and bend for short periods of time.
  • Regularly work on repetitive tasks.
  • Frequently bend to file and maintain files.
  • Occasionally lift 10-20 pounds.

Other requirements:

  • Initial and continued employment background investigation required – fingerprints via Live Scan
  • Initial and continued TB Assessment required for employment in CA schools
