Rolling Hills Preparatory School seeks a full-time Controller. The Controller is responsible for the overall management and integrity of the School’s financial records by overseeing financial transactions, maintaining appropriate records, preparing reports, developing and managing the budget with the Director of Finance, and establishing and maintaining appropriate controls, policies and procedures.

This position reports to the Director of Finance and will work in cooperation with the Business Office, Administrative, and Leadership teams. This role is based in San Pedro, CA.

About the role:

  • General Accounting – Manage all accounting functions: responsible for the input of accurate and timely financial information into the GL and internal reports; prepare account reconciliations on a monthly basis; and maintain internal financial controls; manage school activities billing through the year; Manage accounts payable and pay bills in a timely manner.
  • Audit and Tax – Act as subject-matter expert for accounting and tax rules. Serve as the lead person for the annual audit and annual tax filings, including reviewing and preparing schedules for auditors, generating the financial statements and related footnotes, and coordinating the preparation of all state and federal tax returns.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting – Assist the Director of Finance in developing, maintaining, and monitoring the School’s short-term budgets (operating, capital, campaign) and long-term financial models. Prepare monthly budget and forecast reports and variance analysis.
  • Treasury – Track the School’s cash flow to optimize interest income and minimize financing expense; weekly bank deposits of receivables; manage petty cash and cash boxes
  • Payroll – Manage payroll processing and submit after approval from Director of Finance
  • Enrollment – Issue re-enrollment and new enrollments agreements; liaison between families and Schools and Students Services financial aid application
  • Governance – Provide support for various governance committees including the Finance, Investment, Audit, and Financial Aid Committees, and other ad hoc committees as requested.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Senior level experience in the Finance Department of a school or other nonprofit organization, or external accounting for nonprofit organizations
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, including bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, payroll preparation, and preparation for external audits
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Business is required
  • Must understand and apply GAAP and tax laws
  • Expertise in Excel
  • Knowledge of ADP WorkforceNow
  • Knowledge of Quickbooks
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud
  • CPA license is highly desired

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Willingness and ability to work in a highly-demanding environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
  • Ability and willingness to attend and work occasional overnight field trips
  • Ability to travel safely and comfortably across a campus
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs
  • Work primarily in a traditional, climate-controlled classroom environment and work intermittently in outside weather conditions consistent with San Pedro weather

Other Considerations:

  • Compensation Range: $85,000 – $115,00 per year
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
