About Francis Parker School:

Francis Parker School is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1315 students in grades JK-12. Founded in 1912, the school’s mission is “to create and inspire a diverse community of independent thinkers whose academic excellence, global perspective and strength of character prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the world.” Francis Parker School has two campuses in close proximity. One in Mission Hills (Lower School JK-5), and a second in Linda Vista (Middle and Upper School 6-8 and 9-12, respectively).

Job Description:

The Tchang Teaching Fellowship provides funding to help Parker recruit outstanding graduate student(s) to serve as an instructor (Fellow) for an academic year. The Tchang Teaching Fellow brings new perspectives into the classroom while gaining significant teaching experience in an innovative and supportive environment.

The Tchang Teaching Fellow should exemplify the highest standards of subject knowledge and passion for teaching. They believe in the Parker mission, bring current skills and knowledge in their subject areas and have an exceptional ability to inspire young minds.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

A Tchang Teaching Fellow is responsible for the traditional duties associated with a successful classroom teaching assistantship including assisting the supervising teacher with classroom activities, facilitating individual and small group sessions with students, program and lesson preparation, and evaluation of students. Fellows will receive support and coaching from the Director of Curriculum Alignment and Instructional Practice, the supervising teacher, appropriate Department Chairs, and Division Heads.

Specific Responsibilities

Provide a safe, nurturing environment for children that encourages social, emotional, physical and intellectual development;
Be familiar with ages and stages of development for children assigned to the grade level;
Demonstrate awareness of the entire classroom group whether working with a small group or individuals;
Perform duties that are instructional or deliver direct services to students or parents under the supervision of the assigned classroom teacher(s).
Prepare lesson plans, materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment and demonstrations as necessary to support instruction, as approved by the classroom teacher(s).
Tutor and assist children in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers;
Observe students’ performance and record relevant data to assess progress.
Supervision

Supervise students in the classroom, halls, cafeteria, playground, and on field trips;
Uphold school rules, STRIVE (school character code) and school policies.
Coordination with Classroom Teachers

Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or problems;
Participate actively in the teaching team through communication, collaboration and curriculum planning;
Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as requested.
Communication

Respond to teacher/parent/students concerns with sensitivity, interest and respect.
Staff Development

·                     Continue professional growth by attending courses, asking for feedback and reading professional literature.

Salary and Benefits:

Compensation for the Tchang Teaching Fellow will be $16.30 per hour, based on an expected 20-hour work week. An additional stipend will be awarded to the Fellow to use at his/her discretion. Parker will also support candidates who wish to seek any academic or financial benefit available through his/her college/university. This position is not eligible for benefits.

Parker will coordinate one meeting with the Fellow and the Tchang Teaching Fellowship benefactors during the 2022-2023 school year.

Eligibility

All students enrolled in a master’s degree program within a School of Education in the broader San Diego Area. Students must remain in good academic standing (maintain above a 3.0 cumulative grade point average) while in the Fellow Teacher program.  All selected Fellows will be screened in accordance with employment policy at Francis Parker.

Selection

Selections will be based on academic credentials and interviews of candidates.  Interviews will be conducted by a joint committee which will include the Director of Curriculum Alignment and Instructional Practice from Francis Parker School and the candidate’s faculty advisor.  Other administrators or faculty from both the college/university and the School will also participate.

Term

The selected candidate will be appointed the Tchang Teaching Fellow for the duration of the 2022-2023 school year, ending in June 2023. The School reserves the right to withdraw the Fellow title and stipend at any time.
