Director of Communications

 

Department of Marketing and Communications

 

Summary:

 

The Director of Communications is a key member of a deeply experienced and collaborative marketing and communications leadership team and is responsible for supporting the marketing and communications strategy and planning; developing and implementing communications to external and internal constituencies; and developing and implementing public relations, media outreach and advertising campaigns. The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications and supervises the Communications Manager. Works closely with the Office of Admission, faculty and staff members, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, among other departments throughout the school.

Major Responsibilities:

 

The Director of Communications is responsible for the following activities, as well as other duties as assigned.

 

Marketing and Communications Department Management

·         Works with Executive Director of Marketing and Communications to develop annual marketing and communications strategy and plans for Chadwick School.

·         Supports Executive Director of Marketing and Communications in senior-level initiatives, including crisis communications, fundraising, community relations, government relations, speechwriting, among other areas, as needed.

·         Supervises and mentors Communications Manager in their major responsibilities.

 

Internal / External Communications

●     Managing editor for email communications to internal and external audiences, including weekly, semimonthly and quarterly newsletters.

●     Serves as main contact for communications support and resources to the following internal clients in their communications to the Chadwick community:

o      Senior Administrators, Faculty and Staff

o      Parent Association Board Members and Parent Organizations

o      Room Parents (Grades K-6) / Parent Representatives (Grades 7-12)

●     Researches, writes and edits email communications for parent community and/or Faculty/Staff.

●     Proofreads schoolwide communications, including those related to Commencement, Office of Development, major programs, and emails from Senior Administrators and various departments.

Print Publications

●     Manages the design, development, editing and printing of print publications, including Compass magazine and the Senior Class Tribute Book.

●     Hires and supervises designers, freelance writers, photographers, printers and other vendors for print publications.

 

Public Relations / Advertising

●     Leads public relations and media outreach on behalf of Chadwick, including the following:

o      Develops media relations plan and establishes targets for positive impressions on the school. Prepares results reports on a quarterly and annual basis.

o      Creates key messages and briefing documents for media outreach efforts.

 

Analytics

●     Understands and implements best practices in email and newsletter communications, public relations and advertising plans.

●     Understands evolving trends in print publications and incorporates these as appropriate in Chadwick’s major publications.

●     Monitors newsletter and email open rates and click-through rates on a monthly basis and provides recommendations for enhancements and improvements.

●     Works to ensure Chadwick quality standards and brand guidelines are followed in all communications.

 

Required Qualifications:

●     Six to eight years of demonstrated experience in internal communications and external communications, with extensive knowledge of AP style and print publication best practices.

●     Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.

●     Excellent command of English language (both spoken and written), and expertise writing, editing and proofreading copy with clarity, brevity and creativity.

●     Excellent attention to detail and resourcefulness, proven flexibility, strong organizational skills, adept at problem-solving, and excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.

●     Strong project management skills, with ability to manage multiple projects effectively and autonomously in a fast-paced environment.

●     Dynamic self-starter and innovator with a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous improvement.

●     Skilled at developing and mentoring junior staff members.

●     Proficiency in MS Office Suite.

●     Must be a team player who is highly motivated and aligned with the Mission and Core Values of Chadwick School and principles of a 21st-century education.

●     Preferred Experience:

o          Proficient in AP Style Guidelines

o          Experience leading communications in an independent school

o          Graphic Design experience using Adobe Creative Suite is a plus

o          Preferred experience with Mac environment, Google Docs, MailChimp and Enotify

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Required to lift and carry up to a maximum of 25 lbs., in a correct manner consistent with the appropriate training provided by the School.
Occasionally required to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, touch and use tools, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, twist, lift, reach, push, pull, grasp, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, grasp, talk, hear, and walk during the course of employment.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus.
May use telephone, computer, copier, and other office equipment in the course of a day.
Required to sit while operating word processing equipment for approximately 6-8 hours daily, repetitive motion for typing and other keystroke needs.
