Position Summary:

The Communications Manager produces a variety of communications that advance the School’s mission, values, and content to both its internal community (enrolled families, alumni, donors, trustees, faculty, and staff) and target external audiences (prospective families, educational professionals, potential donors, among others).

Reporting to and collaborating closely with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications, the Communications Manager writes, edits, fact-checks, proofreads, and participates actively in the design, production, and distribution of these print, web, and digital materials on a tight schedule as part of an efficient, two-person in-house team. Across all projects, the Communications Manager partners successfully with faculty and staff to identify and create content, ensuring that messaging is clear, consistent, compelling, and relevant.

The Communications Manager also provides general support to the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications with regards to advertising and media relations, among other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:


● Manages Westmark’s busy schedule of e-communications, including This Week at Westmark, in order to keep the community informed of School initiatives and priorities, drive interest and attendance to events, support admissions and fundraising efforts, and enable the various constituents to become active partners with the School in meeting student needs.

● Writes and edits e-communications, circulates them for approval as necessary, pulls constituent e-lists, schedules on-time delivery, and tracks analytics.

Print and Digital Collateral:

● Writes and edits content for a variety of print and digital collateral, such as postcards, brochures, flyers, invitations, slide decks, promo items, and signage.

● Formulates and monitors editorial, design, production, printing, and mailing schedules. Interacts effectively with freelance writers, designers, printers, and fulfillment houses.

● Supports the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications on major institutional publications and press materials.


● Supports the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications in crafting web content, ensuring that the copy and visuals are fresh, up-to-date, and brand-aligned at all times.

● Builds web pages, including associated forms, and makes updates proactively and regularly. Collaborates with web consultants as needed.

● Manages web-related technical support needs with the School’s website provider, FinalSite, including database integration in coordination with the IT team.

Social Media:

● Takes a lead role in executing and refining Westmark’s social media strategy, both organic and paid.

● Proposes, sources or creates, schedules, and publishes social media content on Instagram and Facebook primarily.

● Engages diligently and proactively with social media followers. Tracks analytics.

Videography and Photography:

● Oversees or assists in videography and photography shoots. Provides art direction to freelance videographers and photographers.

● Organizes and maintains digital assets.

House Style Guides:

● Proactively adheres to and manages Westmark’s editorial and visual style guide to ensure brand consistency across all communications.


● Bachelor’s degree in English, marketing, or communications and 5+ years of experience as an account executive, writer/editor, or related communications professional position.

● Exceptional skills, track record, and interest in performing editorial functions, including copywriting, copyediting, fact-checking, giving and receiving editorial feedback, and proofreading, preferably in a K–12 school marketing and communications setting.

● Strong familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style standards, and superior ability to manage house style for print, digital, web, and social media communications. Superb attention to grammar, spelling, diction, word usage, typographic treatment, and punctuation. Firm command of standard typesetters’ annotations.

● Proven success in managing a fast-changing and varied workload and completing both simple and high-profile projects on time and within budget. Ability to meet and drive deadlines, prioritize projects, and problem-solve independently with sound judgment.

● Excellent interpersonal skills, with a sincere commitment to developing productive relationships, both within and beyond the School. Ability to thrive in a busy, multisensory, and highly collaborative work environment.

● Positive, energetic, cooperative, can-do attitude. Self-starter approach to completing projects, as well as improving processes and procedures.

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Experience using FinalSite (or other CMS or email platforms) strongly preferred. Basic knowledge of HTML, Photoshop, Canva, and InDesign a plus.

● Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

● Working knowledge of advertising and media relations practices a plus.

● A keen appreciation and understanding of the Westmark School mission.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the essential functions and responsibilities of this job:

● The employee is required to sit in on meetings and work on a computer for long periods of time;

● The employee is required to walk, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, talk, and hear;

● The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 20 lbs; and

● Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.


Westmark School follows CDC and LACDPH protocols for K–12 schools. All faculty, staff and students are required to be fully vaccinated.
